The New Google Ad Network Certification: Why It Matters & How StartApp is Leading the Way
The new Ad Network Certification by Google Play is designed to make children’s apps safer. StartApp is one of the very first mobile partners to receive Google’s new SDK certification. For publishers and advertisers of family apps, StartApp is the smart, safe and certified choice.
In the online industry, the issue of child safety has long plagued parents and educators. In 2017, a whopping 94% of parents surveyed in the US said they pay attention to the content of the games their children are playing. For developers of family-friendly apps, controlling exposure to inappropriate ads and content is a constant and critical challenge.
Despite the proliferation and popularity of parental tracking and control products, there’s much more work to be done in ensuring the protection of children spending time on apps. And Google is taking the initiative with its new Ad Network Certification program.
Google Goes Family Friendly
Google’s new SDK certification is designed to ensure that children’s apps available in the Play Store are completely suitable and safe, with no content or advertising that is age-inappropriate, exploitative or harmful. Google has undertaken to assess mobile ad networks and determine which are compliant with the new certification standards. Those who meet the criteria are selected to be included on the list of Google certified ad networks.
In order to be certified as kid safe by Google, the partner must be in compliance with the US COPPA (The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act), which regulates appropriate websites, apps and services for children under the age of 13, and the EU’s GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation), which monitors safety and privacy for children under the age of 16.
According to the new certification, Google will only allow app developers to integrate certified networks into children’s apps, via SDK or API.
StartApp: Child Safe, Brand Safe
StartApp has been selected as one of the first and few mobile networks to be certified under the new Google Ad Network Certification policy, having met the strict criteria for app safety for children and families.
StartApp is fully COPPA and GDPR compliant, which means no collection of any personal data from children aged under 13 (US) and 16 (EU). The StartApp SDK only supports kid-safe advertising content. All advertising campaigns submitted to the StartApp platform are reviewed and vetted to ensure they are suitable to run on kid-centered apps. As part of the initial approved list for the Google certification program, StartApp is committed to ensuring a safe and appropriate app ecosystem for children and their families.
